Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - 10 Best Episodes Not About The Main Cast
9. For The Uniform
Michael Eddington was never quite the sympathetic character that either Ro Laren or Cal Hudson were. While the motives are more or less the same, his arrogance blocked audiences from truly warming toward him. For The Uniform then would seem to be the culmination of the chase for Eddington, pushing Sisko further and further into the role of the villain in this piece.
While the episode could arguably be just as much about the captain as it is about the Maquis, it is Eddington's assurance that he is so completely in the right that makes the episode work. While he is a traitor to Starfleet, he simply refuses to see it that way, engaging in a private war out in the Demilitarized Zone. He attacks the USS Defiant and the USS Malinche, before poisoning the atmosphere of a Cardassian colony.
It is almost frustrating in how he sees himself, yet there is a certain charm to it as well. His follow up to this episode, Blaze of Glory, goes further in redeeming the man but there is something to be said for a good villain in Star Trek, and Michael Eddington fits the bill perfectly in this episode.
