Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - 10 Best Episodes Not About The Main Cast

3. The Sound Of Her Voice

Riker DS9
CBS

The Sound Of Her Voice is an odd episode on this list, as the character in question never appears on-screen. Captain Lisa Cusack sends a distress call out into space, desperate for a Starfleet vessel to pick it up. When it is answered, she is elated and there begins a series of conversations between her and the crew.

The episode is a fantastic exploration into the minds of these officers who have been serving in the Dominion War, which many episodes simply do not have the time to examine. Through talking to Lisa, the show slows down. The audience gets to better understand characters like Bashir, Kassidy Yates, and even Sisko. Throughout the whole episode, Lisa's voice is the key to our understanding and empathy here.

The final reveal is both crushing, yet handled in such a way that it turns a tragedy into a heartwarming finale. The crew rally around Lisa's coffin, honouring her with a toast and realising that through her, they have come to better know themselves, better appreciate the role that they play and, in the case of Sisko and Kassidy, value each others' presence more than ever before.
