Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Ranking Every Major Character Worst To Best

6. Chief O'Brien

Long before there was ever weekly swearing on Discovery or Picard, trust an Irishman to get a cheeky bit of profanity in. The offending word came in the sixth season episode Time's Orphan, when a busted unit causes Miles to shout out 'B****ocks!'

The long suffering but ultimately popular Chief O'Brien transferred over from the Enterprise, having manned the transporter room for five years. He took on the slightly more stressful job of keeping the barely-functioning Cardassian station working, endearing himself quickly as the most down to Earth, blue collar worker on the show.

The producers saw how much the fans like him and so each season went out of their way to punish him for this. Whether it was watching clones of himself die, serving years in an imaginary prison or having his wife possessed by a Pah-Wraith, poor Miles never could seem to just have an easy year of it.

He was able to share much of his problems over a game of darts with Bashir though, as the two formed an unlikely but strong friendship along the way. He was the first to approach Worf after Jadzia's death with a bottle of blood wine and a few songs. He could never keep that damn shoulder from getting injured again.

He was the every man and the nice guy. Not unlike Scotty, he always could seem to get things working, if only in the nick of time. His affable Irish charm helped him out of many a sticky spot, thanks to the devilish charm of Colm Meaney.
