Despite the fact that Discovery is set in the old-school, non-Abrams continuity, the Vulcan Learning Centre from the 2009 film makes an appearance in the show.
Burnham, born human but adopted by Spock's father Sarek, undergoes the same rigorous educational program her brother did, but it proves too much to bear. In the test we see she's given little time to answer and, when the line of inquiry turns to the Klingon attack she herself witnessed, an automatic failure was pretty much guaranteed.
We rarely get to see life on Vulcan on the big or small screens, so the few brief looks Discovery gave us are very much appreciated. The fact it interlinked both Trek continuities is a great bonus too.
