Star Trek: Discovery 3.3 Review - Ups And Downs From People Of Earth

8. Captain Saru - UP

Star Trek Captain Saru
CBS

This was the moment we all knew was coming. In fact, while the show tried to tease it (with Doug Jones telling me at a convention last year that he thought Burnham was going to get the top spot - the cheeky rascal!), this was always the correct choice.

Captain Saru is just right for the job. He has commanded the Discovery for much of the show, so denying him the top spot would make no sense anyway. But if ever there was a character who earned their stripes more than him, it is tough competition. He accepts the role with humilty and grace, going on then to ask Burnham to serve as his first officer.

There is a moment in each of the series when the Captain taking their seat in the chair gives, for whatever reason and in whatever context, chills along our spines. This moment comes in this episode, where Captain Saru takes his seat.

Naturally, he's faced with peril straight away. Come on Discovery, give the Kelpian a break!
