Star Trek: Discovery - 9 Reasons To Be Worried
7. Visual Inconsistencies
Most of Discovery's visuals do not remotely correspond to an era of Trek that has been cemented since the show's inception. If you remotely know the prime timeline, you've probably twigged that Discovery takes place around the same time as TOS' original pilot episode, "The Cage" (in the 2250s). Here was a bright and hopeful future, illustrated by Starfleet's colourful uniforms and vibrantly lit ships.
Conversely, Discovery depicts a significantly more dystopian and ugly destiny, complete with triangular starships, a barely illuminated bridge and a sour-faced crew that seem to hate each other. We're not expecting slavishly faithful, but the same general template, or an odd similarity here and there would have been far more faithful and pleasing. Instead, Discovery seems to be going out of its way to contradict things.
In today's pessimistic climate, a colourful 60s-throwback series may have been far more welcoming, and probably not as antiquated as people think.
