Star Trek: Discovery - Ups And Downs For Season 3 Episode 4 Forget Me Not
7. Hugh Culber (UP)
Wilson Cruz is truly the stand out played in this week's episode of Star Trek: Discovery. The uproar that followed the decision to kill Dr. Culber in season one was due to how quickly fans had taken to him as a character, meaning that his return was (thankfully) all but inevitable. The few episodes where he struggled with his returned state of being were somewhat frustrating, yet it was a tease as to what Discovery does with this episode, and that is to show the nature of trauma.
Culber becomes the one most perfectly suited to begin aiding the crew in coming back to a semblance of themselves. He has truly been there, he has died and come back (in another time, he may even have been able to share notes with Spock), and the crew of the Discovery have all gone through their own versions of death.
He is the best there is to help and guide them, in lieu of a ship's therapist. He is one of the first to spot the depths of Detmer's pain, along with being a support for Stamets and indeed Saru, who not only is dealing with his own trauma, but the responsibility of being captain as well.
Cruz handles the episode with utter ease, allow the audience a greater insight in how important this character is going forward.
