Star Trek: Dr McCoy's 10 Point Guide To Being The Best Doctor In Starfleet

2: Always Make It Look Like You Know What You Are Doing

An important diplomat belonging to an alien race lies dying and being the only doctor in the room, all eyes on are on you. The problem is that you don't know anything about his physiology and you might end up doing more harm than good. But you have a reputation to maintain and you need to try something. In Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Kirk and McCoy beam over to a Klingon cruiser after it appears that it's been mysteriously attacked by the Enterprise. The Klingon diplomat Gorkon, who was on his way to Earth for a peace conference has been shot and McCoy has to try and save his life. Kirk asks McCoy if he knows what he's doing but he admits that he doesn't even know his anatomy. So McCoy decides the best thing to do is to inject him with a stimulant and perform violent cardiac resuscitation by punching Gorkon in the chest. Remember, hes already said he has no idea about the structure of the Klingon anatomy, so he could be punching him in the stomach for all he knows. Unfortunately, even with McCoy's best efforts, Gorkon doesn't make it. McCoy's Lesson: When facing a situation like this, doing something is always better than not. If the patient lives, you will be praised for your quick thinking. If the worse should happen, you will still get some credit for trying, unless you have just inadvertently walked in on a political conspiracy and end up getting arrested arrest and taken to a Klingon prison planet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=650ClLkTo7k&feature=youtu.be
