Perhaps the character on this list with the most interesting origins, Ash Tyler was in constant turmoil as his Klingon personality consistently tries to overrule his human one. Through his former Klingon personality, Voq, as well as his hybrid nature, Tyler certainly provides the muscle for the USS Discovery.

Despite later having his personalities merged and choosing to leave the discovery, Ash Tyler remains a memorable character, albeit one of the most tragic in Star Trek history, and likely will remain so for the foreseeable future. His romance with Burnham, albeit short-lived, made him an immediate fan favourite and the tragic duality as well as his tendency for being an outsider makes him somebody the viewer can really sympathise with.

However, while Ash Tyler is certainly an interesting character, his murdering of Hugh Culber as well as the attempted assassination on Commander Burnham means that in terms of being a good Chief of Security, he cannot be rated any higher than this.
