As well as archaeology, Picard also demonstrated a flair for negotiation. He became the Klingon Arbiter of Succession, humanity’s chief contact point for the Q Continuum, and brokered peace between more species that you or I have replicated hot dinners.

Plus, y’know, went back in time and helped establish First Contact. This idea has done the rounds on numerous reddit threads now but CBS could effectively commission The West Wing in Space. A gritty and charged political drama set between the clashing galactic powers in the 24th century. At the very heart of it all, one man who known them better than any other, Ambassador Jean-Luc Picard.

Not much can be inferred from the state of the Galaxy this far after any stories that fall within accepted canon. The last thing we have to go off is Spock’s story of being thrown back through time while attempting to stop the Romulan star from going supernova, crating an alternative timeline in the process, from 2009’s Star Trek.

Still though it’s safe to assume that there is, as there always was, tension and conflict across the known universe. Picard might be required to resolve this with discussion now, rather than with a great big f**k off spaceship, but Patrick Stewart’s excels at those tense, fraught, and nuanced exchanges.
