Simply from a show-writing point of view though, Star Trek, at its core, is a show about exploration - to seek out new life and new civilisations, as the saying goes. But where no Star Trek show has boldly gone before though, is ditching Starfleet in order to do that.

Imagine, if you a will, a story of exploration purely for exploration’s sake. Not being sent to designated areas of space to parlay with alien races or patrol borders, but seeking out the most wondrous parts of the universe simply for their own sake. Given the huge advances made in visual effects on TV shows, CBS have the potential to create the most aesthetically stunning Star Trek show ever conceived.

Discovery felt like a huge step forward for the way Star Trek treats space - no longer merely literal window dressing as starfields whizz past in the background - with it actually feeling like its own entity, its own character even, full of terrors and beauty and depth. With space itself as the focal point of the show, Picard and his new crew can be our entry point into this captivating new world.

Leading the audience by the hand as the power of visual effects turns a show predominantly set on bridges and dusty planets with styrofoam rocks, into a jaw-dropping realization of Gene Roddenberry's original dream. What better way to get people really excited about space again.
