Star Trek Voyager Feature Length Episodes: Ranked

7. Future's End

Sarah Silverman Star Trek
Paramount

Future's End was Voyager's first big time travel story and it delivers in spades, not least thanks to the excellent guest cast. Ed Begley Jnr. is a moustache twirling villain in the form of Henry Starling, a twentieth century man who gains access to 29th century technology, starting his tech company based on it. He is responsible for a cataclysm in the future and must be stopped and the crew of Voyager, accidentally sent back in time by the Federation Time Ship Aeon must stop him.

The show is stolen from him by Sarah Siverman's Rain Robinson. She is a delight from start to finish, buzzing so comfortably off Tom Paris and Tuvok. She brings a lightness to the episode that keeps the silly factor in check. She approached producers with the hopes of a cameo and was given this role instead, very much to the advantage of the episode.

Future's End is also most notable for introducing the Doctor's mobile emitter to the show, finally freeing him from the confines of sickbay and allowing him to roam around the ship, which meant he could start to turn up in new story lines outside of the ship.

This marked a shift in the show, raising the bar for the quality overall. Highly enjoyable, not to mention the side plot featuring Chakotay and B'elanna getting kidnapped by conspiracy theorists!
