Star Trek Voyager Feature Length Episodes: Ranked

4. Dark Frontier

Star Trek Voyager Dark Frontier
Paramount

Voyager's fifth season ranks among its best and Dark Frontier is a fantastic feature length story. The introduction of not only Seven's backstory as a child but also Susanna Thompson as the Borg Queen adds a new side to the almost overdone Borg element of the plot.

The crew's idea to take on the Borg and steal technology is genuinely enjoyable and tense. There has been a plot hole through all of Star Trek insofar as, with their technology, the Borg can simply appear wherever they want in whatever numbers they want, but taking this on and trying to steal that technology is a ballsy move on the writers part. Using the heist as a backdoor pilot to the Annika Hansen hour is an excellent segway and also will tie-in to Enterprise in the future.

With solid acting, writing and directing all around, this is one of Voyager's strongest entries. Seven's story continues to unfold as she is given more and more to do with each passing episode and Janeway's love for her becomes more and more evident.

The episode ends with a matriarchal stand off between Janeway and the Queen, both caring about Seven and both for very different reasons. While it is never satisfactorially explained why the Queen doesn't just bring Seven back as the drone she was, the dynamic is fun and interesting to watch. One of Voyager's best.
