Star Wars Rebels Season 3: 20 Easter Eggs & References You Need To See
16. That's No Luke...
After concluding his battle with Maul, Obi-Wan rides to the Homestead and sees a young Luke being called back by his Aunt, with audio ripped straight from the original movie, but we never actually see him up close.
That’s because a character model for Luke Skywalker was never designed for the show by the team, which makes sense since we don’t really see him. Animation models are expensive don’t you know.
The actual animation model used for this scene is none other than a version of Ezra Bridger. The developers felt that since Ezra and Luke would be around the same age, give or take a few days, he would therefore act as a suitable replacement, with the right amount of effects obscuring the truth from its viewers.
What’s interesting is how Obi-Wan watches Luke after his encounter with Ezra. Ezra believed Obi-Wan to be the key to destroying the Sith, but knowing it can’t be him, it’s as though that Obi-Wan is realising for the first time who Luke really is and what he is destined to become.
