Star Wars: The Complete History Of The Darksaber
3. A Spark Of Rebellion
Sabine Wren was a disgraced Mandalorian who fought alongside the Ghost crew as part of the Rebellion. She had been outcast from her family and clan because of a weapon that she had developed when part of the Imperial Academy on Mandalore as a brash, naive young cadet. After learning what the Empire’s plans were for her weapon, she sabotaged it and fled to fly with the crew of the Ghost.
As a weapon specialist, Sabine was no stranger to the Darksaber and the history and responsibility that came with it. Initially, she shunned the weapon and was kept safe by her Jedi ally, Kanan Jarrus. After being convinced by Fenn Rau, a member of Mandalorian clan, the Protectors, Sabine did take up the Darksaber and was trained by Kanan in preparation for using the weapon to rally her people against the Empire that currently occupied her homeworld.
Sabine travelled back to her home alongside Ezra and Kanan to face her family to convince them to join the Rebellion and fight the Empire. However, Sabine was accused of not being the true wielder of the Darksaber, as she had not defeated Maul in combat. Their reunion was interrupted by Mandalorians loyal to the Empire, led by Sar Saxon who had once fought the Republic as part of Maul’s loyalists. During the conflict, Saxon wrestled the Darksaber from Sabine, but using Ezra’s lightsaber, Sabine fought Saxon in one-to-one combat, ultimately getting the better of him.
Refusing to kill him, Sabine walked away to let him live, but Saxon drew a blaster, prepared to shoot her in the back, only to be shot himself by Sabine’s mother, satisfied that the succession of the Darksaber had been found.
Alongside a united Clan Wren and the Protectors of Concord Dawn, Sabine led a small invasion force back to Mandalore on a mission to liberate her father, an influencer in Mandalorian society, from Imperial captivity. Upon their return to Mandalore, they were aided by the Nite Owls, led by former Death Watch fighter, Bo-Katan Kryze. Realising that Bo-Katan was a true and worthy leader of Mandalore, Sabine passed on the Darksaber so that she could continue fighting with the Rebellion.
