Stargate: 10 Reasons Why NOW Is The Perfect Time To Bring The Franchise Back
2. Original Film Reboots
In 2013 Roland Emmerich said in an interview with Digital Spy that he was hoping for a co-production between MGM and Warner Bros. to make a new trilogy of Stargate films as a reboot of the original movie, more or less ignoring the television empire that followed afterwards. Many fans of the shows weren't particularly thrilled about this news. In 2016, Dean Devlin reported that talks had broken down.
While Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin obviously have a claim over the franchise, it's clearly grown away from their original vision and the fanbase that these shows created should be respected, there's no reason why any continuation of Stargate (in some form or another) couldn't incorporate some of the ideas used for the reboot trilogy, going back to something near the tone of the original film.
While there's been some Stargate fiction (both acknowledging and ignoring the television shows), nothing so far has been enough to revive interest. Probably best to leave the original film alone for now and build on it's future.
