Huffman was born as Alaina Kalanj, and is of Croatian descent. At age thirteen, she won the lead role in a series, but was scouted by a model agency - which led to her appearing on runways in Europe and Japan. Several leading roles in television would be in her future though.

In Stargate Universe, she played Tamara Johansen, the medic who was very rapidly upgraded to chief medical officer. She was pregnant in filming the first season and this was written into the plot.

She had previously starred in the Canadian series Painkiller Jane, where she played Maureen Bowers. She would go on to portray Black Canary in Smallville and also appear on Supernatural.

Most recently, she has been appearing in a recurring role on The 100.
