Steven Moffat's 10 Greatest Additions To Doctor Who

9. Ashildr

Doctor Who The Husbands of River Song
BBC Studios

Desperate for a win in 'The Girl Who Died', The Doctor uses an alien device to revive the young viking Ashildr, inadvertently making her immortal.

Ashildr's immortality is portrayed in a different, and considerably darker fashion than other immortal characters from the Whoniverse, such as Captain Jack Harkness. Her human brain is simply not equipped for an eternity's worth of memories Over the course of her encounters with The Doctor, nearly all of her original identity is lost. Ashildr refers to herself as simply 'Me', as that is all she remembers of who she is.

Ashildr becomes a tragic exploration of why no-one should live forever, and a cautionary tale of what The Doctor could become if they were ever left alone for too long.
