Steven Moffat's 10 Greatest Additions To Doctor Who

5. The Silence

Strange aliens that you forget you've seen the second you take your eyes off them, The Silence are another chilling Moffat creation.

To this day, some fans celebrate 'Impossible Astronaut Day', drawing tally marks on their arms in memory of the monsters' on-screen debut. This debut occurred in the two part story 'The Impossible Astronaut/Day Of The Moon', in which The Eleventh Doctor uses a subliminal message hidden in a clip of the Moon Landing to convince the human race to eliminate the Silence.

"You should kill us all on sight."

'Time Of The Doctor' provided a twist to The Silence's story when Tasha Lem reveals that they were originally engineered to take confession from members of the Church of the Papal Mainframe, and were, in the right hands, perfectly harmless. The Silence from earlier episodes were only evil on Madame Kovarian's orders.
