Stranger Things 2: 9 Big Questions We Need Answering In Season 3
2. Is Will Finally Free Of The Upside Down?
Much like the closing down of Hawkins Lab, another happy ending that the season two finale seems to deliver is Will finally being free of the dark influence of the Mind Flayer.
Though he had escaped the Upside Down the previous year, the Mind Flayer was still using Will as a conduit to feel its way into our dimension. However, Joyce, Jonathan and Nancy were eventually able to exorcise it out of him (with some poker-jab action straight out of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom).
Later on, we see Will at the school dance and he even gets himself a girlfriend. But is life really back to normal for Will? Just from a story point of view, it would be a big change for the show as Will has basically acted as the plot generator for the past two seasons. We're not sure what his role would be if he wasn't the, for want of a better term, damsel in distress anymore.
If it was to be revealed that Will remains an inadvertent spy for the Mind Flayer, though, it would make total sense. It would also explain how the creature is going to return next season...
