Stranger Things Season 3 Trailer Reactions: 8 Ups & 2 Downs

1. The On-The-Nose Imagery

As sharply composed as the trailer is for the most part, there are a number of hilariously unsubtle images which rouse more of an eye-roll than anything else.

When the kids are shown erecting a communication mast of some kind, the image is extremely evocative of the iconic, Pulitzer Prize-winning picture "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima." Given the season's Independence Day setting, there's no way this was accidental.

Moreover, it appears that the July 4th setting, intriguing though it is, will likely result in a glut of on-the-nose, overbearing flag-waving imagery, with excessive crane shots of the carnival closing in on Old Glory flying high.

It's entirely possible the Duffers will end up satirising the very notion of the holiday, because otherwise, to those living outside the U.S. it just comes off a tad crass.

And then there's the mildly amusing if thickly-laid visual of Eleven sat in front of a convenience store freezer, which of course is fully loaded with boxes of Eggos.

It all just feels a bit pandering and desperate, coming from a show which really doesn't need to rely on sledgehammer-subtle, fan service-y imagery.

But with these minor issues considered, here are the many things the trailer gets right...
