Supergirl Season 4: 3 Ups & 1 Down From 'Man Of Steel'
2. So Many Callbacks
Too often, the Arrowverse shows flashback to days-gone-by in order to shoehorn new scenes into old events that you just know the writers didn't think of when they actually wrote those original episodes. However, what was very well done about Agent Liberty's flashback narrative was that it didn't take place at one specific time, it took place over the show's entire three-season run.
With flashbacks to Supergirl's TV speech in the Season 1, the Daxamite invasion in Season 2 and the terraforming at Season 3's conclusion, it became clear that Agent Liberty's life was continually impacted by alien invasions. However, this time, the recycling of old footage wasn't just convenient for the narrative, it enhanced the already-compelling storyline, as it was a reminder that while these events were epic when they originally aired, you often don't see what happens to those caught in the crossfire.
Moreover, the fact that the writers took the time to focus on so many previous events really shows how well-researched the episode was. Agent Liberty wasn't just a victim of one of Supergirl's many adventures, he was always on the wrong end of them - and the fact that they were events that we watched unfold really portrayed them in a different light.
Moreover, the callbacks also allowed for some nice blasts from the past, including J'onn as D.E.O. leader, Alex with her Season 1 hairstyle, and some previously unseen footage from Cat Grant's Season 3 press conference.
