Supergirl Season 4: 3 Ups & 1 Down From 'Man Of Steel'
1. The Man Behind The Mask
Until now, this season's Big Bad, Agent Liberty was nothing more than a stereotypical masked assailant leading an anti-alien movement who sought to bring down anyone or anything that didn't originate in his country. We didn't who he was, what he wanted or most importantly, why he was doing this. Until now.
You would think that with a title like 'Man of Steel', the episode may have been referring to Kara's more-famous cousin, Superman. However, that was not the case. Instead, this episode was all about Ben Lockwood - the son of a former steel tycoon who went out of business because of the introduction of Alien NTH Metal that was "Better than steel". Though Ben, a college professor, initially defended aliens, a series of unfortunate events (all of which involved aliens), definitively changed his mind.
After losing his home, his job and his father, Ben turned on everything that he once championed as he attack the NTH Metal factory and killed an innocent Bravik. He was then recruited by Mercy Graves and from there, Agent Liberty was born.
The episode allowed us to see into Liberty's mind and understand what brought him to this point in his life. It transformed him from a one-dimensional one-liner-spouting bad guy to a deep well-rounded compelling character - and this was capped off by a fantastic performance from Sam Witwer.
