Supergirl Season 4: 4 Ups & 1 Down From 'Suspicious Minds'

3. A Compelling Threat

Supergirl Morai
The CW

Upon hearing a distress call, Supergirl made her way to a cargo ship to find the military crew dead and the Colonel being dragged off by an invisible creature. It turned out that the aliens responsible for this were known as the Morai and had been the victims of cruelty at the hands of the U.S. government, who trained them to be killers before changing their minds and, per the president's orders, decided to eliminate them. However, being the trained assassins that they are, the Morai fought back and killed everyone who ever harmed them, until they had one target left: Colonel Lauren Haley.

The reveal that Haley was, at one point, responsible for their suffering really enhanced the episode's overall story as the character was also at the heart of that, and this raised some questions about who she truly was. It added a greater deal of relevance to the subplot and made it feel a lot less like the filler it could have ended up being. But perhaps more importantly, it made us feel a sense of empathy for the Morai, especially the poor creature that decided to take its own life out of fear that it would be returned to the D.E.O.

As an episodic antagonist, the Morai were a win on all counts. On the surface, they were well-trained assassins with cloaking technology that ensured we were in for a chilling adventure (and gave us an episode that was probably as close as we'll ever get to Supergirl vs. Predator). But on the other hand, they were surprisingly well-developed characters that, despite being massive CGI aliens who spent most of the episode being invisible, had no problem touching our hearts.
