Supergirl Season 4 Premiere: 7 Ups & 1 Down From 'American Alien'
1. A Great New Story (With An Important Message)
The season premiere revolved around the rise of a new threat that targeted aliens simply because they weren't born on this planet. Led by the mysterious Agent Liberty, the organisation took part in hate-crimes. Thus, viewers got to get a close look at the issues that aliens in the U.S. dealt with on a daily basis, from discrimination because of their appearance to fearfulness of their origins.
While J'onn correctly believed that there was an anti-alien group out there causing the attacks, Supergirl took a different stance, choosing to believe that the world had progressed so much that aliens wouldn't be considered outsiders anymore. However, though she made some valid points, she was soon forced to recognise that while some progress had been made, there is always more that needs to be done.
Supergirl is no stranger to using its platform to spread awareness about important issues. In the past it has highlighted the coming out process, shone a spotlight on the empowerment of women and dealt with gun violence, and now it's taking that one step further by using its main storyline to highlight the importance to inclusion and acceptance.
