Superman & Lois Review: 5 Ups & 2 Downs From 'Pilot'
Ups...
5. It Feels (And Looks) Like A Film
It didn't take long to notice that Superman and Lois has a drastically different look from the rest of the Arrowverse shows. If you watched the trailer, you probably already noticed it. From the black panels that give it a widescreen presentation to the more experimental cinematography and colour palette, the show looks like it belongs more on the big screen than the small one - and that absolutely works in its favour.
Superman and Lois Lane are larger-than-life characters but Superman and Lois tells something of a more contained story, so the fact that it's juxtaposed against this unexpected cinematic look results in that contained story feeling every bit as larger-than-life as those characters. And it imbues it with a presentation similar to that of the DCEU's Man of Steel while still maintaining all of the important qualities of those nostalgic Superman tales of old.
Superman and Lois looks like a movie and that sets it apart from most of the shows in its genre and it also highlights that family stories can be every bit as captivating as the heroic ones.
