Supernatural: 10 Best Characters Who Appeared After Season One

8. Lucifer

They say a hero is only as good as their villain, and in the history of everything there's no greater villain than the devil himself, Lucifer. In this telling of the biblical tale, Lucifer was the second-oldest of God's four archangels, as well as being one of his most trusted lieutenants. Eventually though, he rebelled against his father when God instructed his children to show love for humanity, whom Lucifer believed to be unworthy.

A significant part of the show's first few seasons saw various characters working to free Lucifer from his cage and bring about the Apocalypse - first Azazel, then Lilith. Lucifer was finally freed at the end of Season Four and first appeared in the flesh (so to speak) in Season Five, manipulating a man named Nick into becoming his vessel. Despite the fact that Sam Winchester was destined to be his true vessel, it was Nick that became Lucifer's main and most-recognised face.

Despite his feelings towards humanity and his role in the Apocalypse, Lucifer actually comes across as a pretty fun guy. Snarky, witty and even a little charming, fans always enjoyed seeing the Prince of Darkness appearing onscreen, especially when played by the brilliant Mark Pellegrino. This is probably what led to him becoming such a recurring presence on the show, even after his initial defeat at the end of Season Five. He would go on to return again and again, right up to the show's end, and fans loved every devilish minute of it.
