Sam and Dean find the location of the Colt. The Colt is being kept by a demon named Crowley. They are able to obtain it because Crowley hates Lucifer. They must go on a suicide mission with Cas, Bobby, Jo, and Ellen to kill Lucifer. The odds of survival are extremely slim but it's the only hope they have. Abandon All Hope is the perfect title for this episode. The writers do a great job of making you feel hopeless throughout it. You know that there is a very small chance Sam and Dean will win, but you want them to. You know it's a suicide mission and most likely more than one friend will perish. Before the suicide mission begins, we are introduced to a new character on the show. A crossroads demon named Crowley. Crowley gives Sam and Dean the Colt because he wants Lucifer dead. With Lucifer dead, he can rule Hell. Mark Sheppard brilliantly plays Crowley as a manipulative and calculating man with a plan. The suicide mission does not go according to plan like everyone knew it would. Hell hounds badly injure Jo and Cas is trapped by Lucifer. Everyone takes shelter in a store. Jo decides to sacrifice herself to kill the Hell Hounds. Her mother Ellen stays with her in a heart breaking scene where they sacrifice themselves. Sam distracts Lucifer while Dean shoots him in the head. We find out that the Colt can't kill everything because Lucifer survives the bullet. Cas is able to free himself and save Sam and Dean. Their attempt was futile and Jo and Ellen died for nothing. The episode ends with everyone mourning and their hopes of winning crushed.
