One of the most insignificant aspects of the whole show that has spiralled into massive internet speculation is Penny's surname. Simply, what is it? Nobody knows. It has never been seen, spoken or heard in the show and fans haven't got a clue why. It almost certainly started unintentionally, but as the series has wore on, fans began to question the omission to the point where the writers can now play games and keep it firmly under wraps.
