At a glance, the scientists which Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj interact with seem nice and timid. But since all these physicists and chemists are desperate to prove their years of research are accurate, the science community can be surprisingly cutthroat.

So, when a pair of Fermi-Lab specialists, Dr. Pemberton and Dr. Campbell, proved Amy and Sheldon's Super-Asymmetry hypothesis was correct, they looked like they had their fellow scientists' best interest at heart.

Only when Sheldon and Amy had a real chance of attaining a Nobel Prize for their work did Pemberton and Campbell reveal their true colours. Desperate for glory, the duo implore Sheldon to drop Amy so the three of them can pick up the award. When he refuses, Pemberton and Campbell try to hog all credit for Sheldon's theory. Thankfully, their fraudulence is exposed, causing the two to be disqualified for Nobel Prize consideration.

Despite the fact Sheldon has had many rivals like Wheaton, Barry, and Leslie, they never made a pretence about their relationship with one another. Because Pemberton and Campbell acted like they were helping Sheldon while stabbing him in the back, it's no surprise why they're regarded as among the show's most despicable characters.
