The Big Bang Theory: Approaching The Season 6 Finale

Amy, Sheldon, and Their Quest For Intimacy

Sheldon_amy By far and away the biggest advance for our cast members have taken place between Sheldon and Amy this season. And while not all expectations for this columnist have been met as it relates to Sheldon Cooper (what, no Nobel pursuit?!), the progress he's made with Amy Farrah Fowler has been very satisfying. This season Amy has pushed Sheldon; she has tested his limits and engaged him in ways that have made him uncomfortable, nervous, and hysterically emotional. Case in point was this week's episode where their quest for intimacy grew by leaps and bounds, as the couple engaged in coitus via Dungeons and Dragons role playing. More importantly, however, this situation, put in motion by Penny nonetheless, forced Sheldon to confront his own fear of physical intimacy with Amy, and thus he engaged it accordingly. Not only that, Sheldon openly admitted for the first time that there is no one closer to him than Amy Farrah Fowler, and the idea of personal intimacy is not outside the realm of possibility for Sheldon Cooper. A huge, defining moment for Sheldon's character for sure, and portrayed with outstanding skill by actor Jim Parsons. And as we approach the end of season 6, Sheldon will once again be forced to deal with the issue of intimacy, as it relates to being on his own and his dependency on others for his day to day well being. With Leonard being offered a job outside of Pasadena, it will be far more interesting to see how Sheldon reacts if Leonard decides to leave and Sheldon is left behind and on his proverbial own.
