The Boys Season 2: 10 Major New Details You Need To Know

The Boys returns to Amazon this September; here's what you need to know before then!

The Boys arrived on Amazon last July, and ended up exceeding everyone's expectations. Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic book series of the same name, the bloody, foul-mouthed adaptation from former Supernatural showrunner Eric Kripke served as a breath of fresh air for superhero fans tired of the same old Marvel and DC TV shows.

Set in a world where superpowers are commonplace, The Seven are a government funded team of heroes not all that different to the Justice League...they're just more villains than anything else. That's where Billy Butcher and his gang come in as these normal humans decide to take the fight to the "Supes" and out them for what they really are. Needless to say, that's no easy task.

Shortly after debuting on the streaming service, Amazon ordered a second season of The Boys, and the former arrives on September 4th. Three episodes will be available then, with subsequent instalments being released each Friday (so, no binge-watching this time).

In this feature, you'll find an in-depth guide exploring everything you need to know about The Boys season two, including surprise casting additions, fresh plot details, and a batsh*t crazy scene with a whale you're going to need to see to believe...

10. X-Men Star Shawn Ashmore Joins The Boys As Lamplighter

Lamplighter was mentioned a few times in the first season of The Boys, and it was his "retirement" which opened the door to Starlight joining The Seven. It's also believed that he was somehow responsible for why The Boys themselves broke up before we met them, so his arrival in season two is clearly going to shed some light on this twisted world's history.

X-Men actor Shawn Ashmore is going to play the character, and showrunner Eric Kripke says, "We were thrilled that Shawn — who is, let’s be honest, an OG superhero — wanted to play the crucial part of Lamplighter. He brings so much depth, menace, and world-weary humanity to this former member of the Seven. And Shawn is a really good guy. We’re grateful to have him join our bloody little family."

For those of you unfamiliar with the comic books, Lamplighter is essentially The Boys' parody of Green Lantern as he uses a pyrokinesis staff that lets him harness open flames and wield them in all sorts of unique ways (just like how Hal Jordan uses his willpower to create constructs). Obviously, this is a nice twist to him having place Iceman in those Marvel movies.

The description for Lamplighter explains that "when he enters [The Boys'] lives again, he dredges up painful memories, pokes at their raw nerves, and changes everything."
