The Expanse: Ranking The Main Characters From Worst To Best
5. James Holden
The show's protagonist wasn't always that compelling of a character. For the first couple seasons, Jim Holden's concentrated obsession on destroying the Protomolecule became almost tedious and despite how 'special' everyone else seemed to think he was, he failed to reach the heights of his supporting cast. Luckily that changed for the captain of the Rocinante once he started seeing the dead ghost of Joe Miller.
Miller's ghost allowed for actor Steven Strait to show off some amusing comedic chops as he appeared mad to everyone else on the show. Holden began to develop a fitting self awareness as he started cursing the fact this weird stuff always seemed to happen to him. As Holden becomes the centre of most of the alien goings on in the show, it allows him to become a more likable character as he feels more like a discoverer whereas before he was a bland destroyer.
His relationship with Naomi has also endured long enough on the show to develop into a sweet and heartfelt romance that is both believable and enjoyable to watch progress. Now that Joe seems to be permanently off the show and after Season Five seemed to primarily focus on Naomi over Holden, it will be interesting to see how much of a focus he'll take in the final season and if it'll hold up to his great Season Three/Four material.
