4. Joe Miller
A wily and unfiltered Thomas Jane stumbles throughout the Expanse as Detective Joe Miller. A rough and grim detective on Ceres station, Miller takes a lot of influence from noir crime fighters of the 50s which makes him instantly stand out in the ensemble.
Miller's drive is to find Julie Mao, a missing woman who he has never met but soon starts to fall in love with from afar. It is a strange character to buy at times but Miller is an idealist and a dreamer who has never known the taste of rain and just wishes for a better life for himself.
After it is revealed that Julie has been consumed by the Protomolecule and she is inadvertently steering Eros station directly for Earth, Miller sacrifices himself in a surprisingly touching scene that allows him to be with Julie and save the planet.
What comes next is equally as compelling. Now fused with the Protomolecule as well, Miller appears to Jim Holden in a collection of amusing scenes that show the unsatisfied Belter in a state between life and death. Thomas Jane was always a fantastic presence on the show and brought a degree of quiet tragedy to the Expanse.
