The Expanse: Ranking The Main Characters From Worst To Best
18. Jules-Pierre Mao
When a large part of the first season is built around who is in charge of the mysterious organisation that has powerful stealth ships and secrets about alien parasites, it was slightly disappointing to discover a somewhat generic wealthy Earther at the centre of it all. Jules-Pierre Mao was attempting to unlock the secrets of the Protomolecule, a task which he prioritised above caring for the safety of his own daughters.
Mao isn't a terrible villain, he just isn't overly engaging. His motives can be boiled down to a quest for scientific knowledge and on a show where several characters are morally grey, science doesn't quite cut it.
His love for Julie in spite of her resentment for him and his disregard for Clarissa in spite of her dedication to him are by far his most interesting qualities. Now he is imprisoned, it seems unlikely we will hear from him again in the final season, especially since he has refused contact with Clarissa.
