The Flash: 5 Lessons It Should Learn From Lois & Clark: The New Adventures Of Superman

1. What's The Show's Name?

Here is the first quality check The Flash writers should ask before each script; "Is this story about Barry Allen?"

The show has a strong ensemble of characters, but it is first and foremost "The Flash". Each episode begins with the voiceover narration "My name is Barry Allen, and I am the fastest man alive..." This is his show. If they don't have a script idea that is about The Flash himself, then it is time to start a new script.

The current season of The Flash has already seen a couple of episodes where Barry was reduced to a cameo appearance. If Grant Gustin is unavailable to other commitments, like filming the annual crossover event, then wait. It comes across as a cheat when he ends up being written out. Focusing on other characters is only refreshing if Barry was usually the focus, but he isn't. Nora West-Allen is the real protagonist this year.

Lois & Clark was always about Lois, Clark, & Superman. Sure, occasionally Jimmy or Perry would get something extra to play with, but they never took the lead. Dean Cain & Teri Hatcher played the full game every episode. The writers dug deeper into them rather than shifting focus. Even if that meant going crazier. Make no mistake that some of Lois & Clark's plots were outrageous. But then again The Flash isn't a stranger to the outrageous.

In the end all fans really care about is spending time with their hero.
