The Flash: 5 Stories Needed To Be Done Before The Series Ends
4. Superman #199 "The Race Between Superman & Flash!"
This was the original race to settle who was the fastest man alive, but certainly not the last. For over 50 years the Flash vs Superman race has been retold again & again. The race has been run through over a half-dozen comic versions over the years. Mostly ending in a tie, although Adventures of Superman # 463 dared to declare a winner. But no spoilers here.
The race has also been adapted in various other mediums over the years. There was an episode of Superman: The Animated Series about it. The Justice League movie teased in it an awesome post credit scene. LEGO's line of Scholastic books for children even published their own version. So why do we need another?
The Flash vs. Superman has become an iconic moment in DC Comics lore. When adapting a DC Comics character for any medium there are such moments, like the Kents finding Kal-El's rocket or the tragic murder of the Waynes, that must be retold or that version feels incomplete. Arrowverse has only had The Flash and Supergirl jokingly refer to running side by side as a race. That fails to live up to the classic imagery.
If The Flash series wants to honor this tradition, then they better move while there is still time. December's Crisis on Infinite Earths is supposed to feature a "remix" of a death of classic DC character, so Superman's time may be limited.
