The Flash: 7 Best Episodes So Far
6. Grodd Lives (Season 1, Episode 21)
Written By: Grainne Godfree & Kai Yu Wu
Directed By: Dermott Downs
After so much focus on the show’s larger mythology, Grodd Lives offers a welcome breather before the show hurtles towards the finale.
This episode was all about Grodd. Despite being one of Flash’s most memorable comic book villains, few expected to actually see the telepathic gorilla on the small screen. So when the show started teasing him in the episodes prior, fans were understandably excited. In fact, the show teased him so effectively that they barely had to show him in the episode for him to be menacing without needing to constantly be present.
Beyond Grodd’s startlingly good special effects, it’s Iris who gets the most memorable stuff this week. The often-maligned character finally showed some agency and confronted Barry and Joe about keeping the Flash’s identity a secret. It was a relief to see her finally be proactive for once and her generally over-the-top response to everything actually came across as reasonable this time.
In the end, Grodd Lives delivered the goods. We got a movie-quality villain, the return of the super-sonic punch and a reminder that the Flash is more than happy to embrace its most ridiculous elements.
