The Flash Season 5: 4 Ups & 3 Downs From ‘Time Bomb’

2. Barry's Out Of Character Behaviour

The Flash Barry Allen

Team Flash's attempts to track down the metahuman that Cicada 2.0 was after started off surprisingly well. Figuring out that the assailant in question caused an ATM explosion years ago which inadvertently killed Grace's parents, they tracked Mr. Bolen to a children's party. But to their surprise, they discovered that the person responsible was actually his wife, Vickie - who revealed that it was all an accident and that her family didn't even know she was a metahuman.

This statement prompted a rather bizarre reaction from Barry who, without any buildup whatsoever, sharply told her that her family has a right to know the truth. On another occasion, you could suggest that his personal thoughts and feelings on the matter may have caused it to come out a little more pointed than he intended it to but, as Barry wasn't shown to have anything in particular on his mind this week, this just felt a little random and, quite frankly, too forceful for CCPD's lovable CSI.

Of course, this was simply a quick means of reminding us how Barry felt about secrets because Nora was on the verge of telling him all about hers. It was a last-minute obstacle for her to overcome and prompted multiple, relevant, conversations about the importance of being honest - all of which beautifully set up the episode's denouement. Nevertheless, its flawed starting point still caught us off-guard and it all would have felt a little more natural if the person giving the lecture hadn't tanked his own relationship with Patty Spivot because he refused to reveal the truth.

It isn't the first time that Barry has behaved out of character for no reason other than the fact that the plot required him to, but it's still every bit as noticeable.
