The Flash Season 5: 5 Ups & 1 Downs From 'Memorabilia'
4. Justice For Iris
In the midst of all the memory machine madness, 'Memorabilia' also served as a redemption arc of sorts for Iris West-Allen. Since Nora's arrival, the beloved Flash staple has been questioning herself, but instead of judging her own previous actions, she was questioning decisions she had yet to make - terrified that Nora's unhappy childhood memories of her suggested that she would become a bad mother.
Though Nora eventually stopped giving her such a hard time, Iris' fears on the matter had never really been dealt with. So, when this week's episode tackled it head-on, it was a pleasant surprise.
Barry and Iris' journey into Nora's consciousness provided them with the opportunity to see some of her own memories - memories that they had yet to experience. So when Iris saw an older version of herself brutally shouting at a young Nora for no apparent reason, she was heartbroken. However, when they eventually realised that this was just a younger Nora's tainted perception of the events, they witnessed a gentler, kinder Iris comfort her tearful daughter.
The whole ordeal prompted Nora to finally apologise for the way she had been treating her mother since she arrived and, in a sense, it felt like the writers were apologising to her for putting her through all of this uncertainty. Finally, Iris (and all of us) can rest easy knowing that she's not the ice queen that Nora portrayed her to be, and will actually turn out to be a good mother. Was there ever any doubt?
