The Handmaid's Tale: 6 Ups And 1 Down From 'Holly'
1. Holly
While the episode wasn't very eventful from a narrative point of view, things did take a turn when June slipped on the snow, which seemingly resulted in her waters breaking. The whole of the episode was littered with flashbacks to the first time June gave birth - when she was pregnant with Hannah - and there was an emphasis on the fact that she had her family and friends around her.
However, this time she was all alone. And the beautiful writing ensured that we experienced every kind of emotion possible as our protagonist feared the worst when she started to bleed out. The red herrings in this episode were magnificent.
The episode concludes with an incredibly powerful montage of June giving birth - both now and in the past - and these scenes are merged with another montage of Janine's birth from Season 1, and all of the breathing exercises Aunt Lydia had taught the girls for when their time came to give birth.
It's at the end that we learn June's mom was named Holly, and that's what she names her new baby.
No. You're crying.
