The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 Review: 7 Ups & 1 Down From 'Women's Work'

4. The Return Of The Voiceover

One of the things that we loved the most about The Handmaid's Tale was June's voiceover. Much like Mr. Robot, the voiceover is used to convey the protagonist's thoughts and feelings because they are unable to convey them in any other way. Without the voice in her head, we'd never know what June was thinking, and her isolation would mean that we'd have hours upon hours of her not saying anything. That doesn't make interesting television. Enter the voiceover.

Since June's meltdown a few weeks back, the voiceover has been absent from the show, so it's hard to know where exactly June stands on what's been going on in Gilead. However, the technique made a much welcomed return in Women's Work.

Interestingly, during the show's closing moments, June says internally:

Someone once said, 'Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them.' We should have known better. I thought there were still secret places, hidden in the cracks and crevices of this world. Places we could make beautiful. Peaceful. Quiet. Safe. Or at least bearable"

Believe it or not, this quotation is actually derived from a quote from Margaret Atwood herself - author of The Handmaid's Tale book.
