The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 Review: 7 Ups & 1 Down From 'Women's Work'

2. Serena's Desire To Do The Right Thing

The Handmaid's Tale

Let's get something out of the way before we proceed. Serena Waterford is no angel. The domineering mistress has made June's life a living hell and proven her viciousness on many occasions. She's also one of the main reasons why Gilead is the way that is. But at the end of the day, she thought she was doing the right thing. And when Serena thinks she knows what's best, she doesn't give up - something we saw in the latest episode.

When she learned that Commander Putnam's baby had fallen ill, she used her initiative to get Gilead's top neonatologist to check the child over. However, she had to break a few rules to do it, including forging her husband's signature. Why? Because the neonatologist is a woman — a Martha — and as we've been told time and again on this show, women aren't allowed to do anything.
