The Haunting Of Hill House Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs
1. The Slightly Disappointing Ending
No spoilers here of course, but the resolution to the Crain's story is a bit of anti-climax. Flanagan surprisingly opts to eschew the eeriness of the preceding 10 hours and settles for an overly treacly, sentimental ending that doesn't really feel appropriate, earned or consistent with what came before it.
It doesn't help at all that a closing montage makes a rather cringe-worthy musical choice, and while it's not enough to invalidate the brilliance that preceded it, it's a damn shame the show ends on such a tepid, unconvincing note.
It's likely to be a divisive ending in the very least, so it will probably work for as many people as it doesn't. Clearly, though, something far more persuasive was both possible and necessary.
But for the most part the show's an absolute banger, so here's everything it gets right...
