The Last Dance Review: 6 Ups & 1 Down

3. It’s Not Just About Michael Jordan

One trap that The Last Dance could have fallen into would have been to make the documentary entirely about Michael Jordan. He was the main reason the Bulls won so many championships, he was the leader of the team, and he was the greatest to ever play the sport.

However, Michael Jordan did not win six championships with the Chicago Bulls alone, there were other key parts of the organisation and it was great to see them get some attention as well. Of course, Michael was the main focus for a lot of the series, but each of those that also contributed in a big way got their moment in the spotlight.

Scottie Pippen was one of the most undervalued and underpaid players in NBA history, and was able to tell his story in The Last Dance. Dennis Rodman was able to talk about why he needed to go to Las Vegas in the middle of the NBA Finals, or cut a promo with Hulk Hogan instead of going to practice.

Steve Kerr, a role player in the Bulls '98 championship run was able to talk about how he was influenced by Michael, and how he became as good as he did, and even head coach Phil Jackson spoke about the inspirations he took from Native America. MJ did not make the Bulls great on his own, and it is good to see that The Last Dance acknowledged this.
