The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power - 11 Things We Expect To See

2. The Fall Of Numenor

Lord of the Rings
New Line Cinema

One of the greatest, if not the greatest, kingdoms of Men that existed in the history of Tolkien's work, the Men of Numenor were extremely long-lived, wise, and powerful, until they began to grow too arrogant and were punished as a result.

Blessed with extremely long life, the Numenorians lived on an island and built a great kingdom. Though they were banned from sailing too far west to the Valinor and the Undying Lands, they instead expanded eastward and took over many lands in Middle Earth. Their great armies even defeated Sauron and rescued many of their Elven allies from his grasp. However, Sauron eventually tricked Numenorian king Ar-Pharazôn into believing that worshipping dark god Morgoth (Sauron's old boss Melkor) and attacking Valinor would give them true immortality.

Only a few Numenorians were faithful to the Valar, and sailed away before the attack. They were the only ones spared when Eru Ilúvatar, creator of the world, sank Numenor under the waves and turned the earth round, preventing Mortals from ever coming to Valinor again.

Among the surviving faithful were Elendil and his son Isildur, who would later aid in the wars against Sauron's forces.
