7. The Two Trees

Though it may not seem like it at first, the teaser image showing two bright and dazzling trees in the distance represents something more world-shattering than even the titular rings themselves.

The Silmarils, aka what the entire book The Silmarillion was named after, were perfect jewels forged by the Noldor leader Feanor from the two trees, Telperion and Laurelin. This was after they were destroyed by Melkor (Sauron's boss, the ultimate evil) and Ungoliant (the primordial giant spider who birthed all giant spiders). The Trees were so radiant that their fruit and flower became the sun and the moon, and the Silmarils were so beautiful that an entire history of slaughter followed their creation.

This is already ancient history by the Second Age, when the series takes place, but it does mean we're likely to see even a little of the history behind them. Tied to these trees are major, world-shattering events that forced the Noldor Elves into exile, placing them in Middle Earth as Sauron began his rise to power, picking up where his master left off.
