The Office: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best

8. Season 8

It happens to the best of them. Actors leave, writers wander off into other projects and fan bases dwindle. The Office is one of the biggest victims of losing what made it so endeared in the first place. Mindy Kaling (who played Kelly Kapoor) was only sporadically writing for the show at this point, the characters that were being added to this season felt severely out of touch with the show's unique style and above all else and Michael Scott finally ended his contract with Dunder Mifflin a season earlier.

After the emotional highs and the overwhelming lows that the last season brought, with its culmination being both a beautiful swansong to its most beloved character and an instant signal of the mediocrity that was to come - with Will Ferrell's horrendous stint as the new boss being a precursor - it's safe to say that there were more than a few question marks hanging over the subsequent season.

Those questions were mostly answered in the first few episodes, immediately bringing the audience's worst fears to life as it proved the show was completely directionless after bringing minor characters to the forefront. Despite them having little development or just outright no business to carry the show, they're still forcibly dangled in front of you almost as a shoddy form of compensation for losing Michael Scott.

There honestly isn't much to be desired in season 8 and retrospectively, there is absolutely zero reason to revisit this abysmal season of television. The end was certainly near and it shouldn't have been postponed in the way that it was.
