The Office: Every Season Ranked Worst To Best

3. Season 3

The Office
NBC

The writers knew that when they finished penning season 2 not only did they have loose threads to tie up but that the series had the potential to exponentially grow into something much bigger than originally anticipated. So, when coming to this realisation, what's the best approach to solidifying this show as something worthy of its prime-time slot?

Well, throwing more personalities into the mix of course!

Now, in the average series, characters are brought in mostly one at a time, they're either a result of circumstance, an aide in some sort of adventure before becoming a prominent member of the group or they could even slouch into their role completely by accident. In the case of The Office however, no accidents were made. Well, unless you count the original characterisation of Andy, that is.

Contextually, this works on so many levels and is incorporated flawlessly. Jim has moved to another branch, cultivating relationships in the process and as a result is more or less enjoying his new life. He even begins dating someone during his tenure there, but then the two branches merge, which not only brings Jim back home, but adds some mouthwatering drama in the form of a love triangle for the viewers to indulge in. The collision of so many contrasting people is the real standout though, as having so many clashing personalities engaging at once is nothing short of genius.

Ultimately though, it falls a few places short of the top spot due to simply being more of a foundational season, more experimental in its approach and overall kind of underdeveloped - in comparison to latter seasons that is. Then again though, that's not exactly an insult with the impervious quality the show maintains going forward.
