The Politician Review: 5 Ups & 3 Downs

The Netflix series promises a lot, but does it deliver?

Ryan Murphy is no stranger to producing compelling television. A veteran of his craft, the writer, director and producer has given the world phenomenons like Glee, American Horror Story, Nip/Tuck and American Crime Story and he recently inked a whopping $300 million deal with Netflix - one that allows him to produce exclusive shows for the streaming giant.

The first of those shows is The Politician: a dramedy focused on a high school student determined to live out his dreams and become the president of the United States - but in order to get there, he must become student body president of St. Sebastian first.

Starring Ben Platt as the ambitious Payton Hobart, the eight-part series also boasts an impressive supporting cast as the likes of Zoey Deutch, Lucy Boynton, Laura Dreyfuss and David Corenswet shine alongside veterans such as Jessica Lange and Gwyneth Paltrow. But does the show itself compare to its convincing campaign?

For the most part The Politician tells the story it initially set out to, though it doesn't necessarily do so in as convincing a fashion as many of us had hoped it would. That said, it's a thoroughly entertaining piece of television that takes a different in-your-face approach to the world of politics.
